Pakistan is one of the progressive economies in the region with a GDP growth rate of 5.8% in 2007-08. The agriculture and manufacturing sectors account for 20.9% and 18.9% share in the economy; whereas, the services sector has the largest share of 53.2% in the economy.

Pakistan has seen considerable growth in various sectors over the past few years. The chemical industry of Pakistan is rapidly developing with the use of intensive technology to cater to numerous manufacturing sectors for the production of value added products. The industrialised countries are major producers of chemicals while a lucrative market is rapidly emerging in Asia.

Consequently, Pakistan's chemical industry has gained much significance in attracting a foreign direct investment of US$ 253 million over the last five years. Currently, more than 400 chemical manufacturing units are operating in Pakistan and many of them have specialised in the production of key chemicals with the steady progress and development of this industry. The imports of chemicals are also increasing both in terms of value and volume, reaching US$ 2.8 billion in 2007-08 to meet the total demand of chemicals. The rapidly changing economic scenario has re info rced the local manufacturers to engage in import substitution by acquiring latest technologies and diversifying their product range to surpass the petroleum & chemical exports of US$ 1.88 billion (2007-08).
